Dr. Cheriyan is an anesthesiologist and fellowship-trained interventional pain management physician. He focuses on a comprehensive, interdisciplinary and collaborative approach to treating patients with various chronic pain conditions. He strives not only to contribute to expanding the knowledge in the field but more importantly, to translate high- quality research to implement the best individualized treatment plans to minimize pain and maximize functional ability for each patient. He treats all chronic pain conditions including back pain, osteoarthritis, facial pain and headache, and complex pain syndromes. He has special interest in neuromodulation including spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal pumps.
Dr. Cheriyan completed medical school at Government Medical College, Trivandrum, India. He has a postgraduate degree in hospital administration from Anna University, India and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston where he specialized in tissue engineering and design of medical devices.
He helped establish a health center in an underserved rural tribal community in India before completing postdoctoral research fellowships at Harvard Medical school, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Boston. He has extensive expertise in tissue engineering including stem cell research for bone and cartilage regeneration. He held a joint appointment as a clinical research fellow in the hand and upper extremity service at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston and was a Research Scientist at New York University in the Division of Spine surgery. His research included spinal cord injuries, clinical outcome studies in the field of orthopedics and spine including FDA device studies.
Dr. Cheriyan did his surgical internship at the BronxCare Health, Mt. Sinai Health Systems, New York where he was pleased to be honored as the best intern. He completed his anesthesiology and interventional pain management fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta. While in this role, he mentored numerous graduate and medical students, and residents; many of whom are in residency and faculty positions at top institutions across the country.
He has deep curiosity for learning and finding out how best to optimize patient’s health outcomes. His research pursuits span the spectrum of basic science, translation and clinical research. He enjoys writing and has published over 60 scientific publications in journals in the fields of neuroscience, biomaterials, tissue engineering, molecular biology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, anesthesiology and pain medicine. He is passionate about contributing to the field and has completed over a 100 presentations at meetings receiving numerous awards from the North American Spine Society, American Society of Anesthesiologists, and Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists. He has been invited to be a reviewer of many medical journals and has co-authored two textbooks on physiology and spine disorders.
Dr. Cheriyan enjoys traveling, hiking, playing the guitar, soccer and chess. Dr. Cheriyan respects and understands the concerns of patients and strives to provide compassionate high-quality care to all.
